Samuel Mayer, initially trained as an environmental chemist, first worked on themes related to environmental management with the implementation of the ISO 14001 normative reference at TIMET. He obtained a Specialized Master’s Degree in Ecodesign at Arts et Métiers en 2001. Since then, he has taken charge of the ecodesign projects at Steelcase, and then at CCI de Saint-Etienne/Montbrison, for which he is developing an ecodesign prediagnosis. This method of sensitizing companies to eco-innovation now serves as a reference. After creating the ecodesign consulting and training firm SUSTENERE, he is now in charge of development of a unique resource centre in ecodesign for SMEs and SMIs.
Starting in 2002, further to the “environment” actions taken since 1996, CCI de Saint Étienne/Montbrison was the first chamber of commerce and industry (CCI) in France to initiate an ecodesign action, embarking on a project to raise ecodesign awareness among the businesses in its jurisdiction.
The first ecodesign prediagnosis was developed during this project. This is a tool that allows “environment” or “technological development” heads of mission to take stock of the company’s challenges and products in relation to ecodesign. The method was then disseminated to the “environment” heads of mission of CCI de Rhône Alpes.
This method was selected from among the 48 best CCI tools at CCI PRO 2006. It has been tested in over 200 businesses. Today, the CCI is transferring this tool to other regions: the CCIs of Auvergne, Franche-Comté, Rhône-Alpes and Aquitaine and the Québec Institute for Product Development. CCI de Saint Étienne/Montbrison today is recognized nationally for its ecodesign competencies. This is why it is currently working on a project to launch a life cycle management ecodesign hub association (Association Pôle Eco conception Management du Cycle de Vie).
