Collomb, Gérard, Mayor of Lyon (France)

Gérard Collomb, who rebuilt the Socialist Party in the Rhône region in the late 1960s, was elected to Lyon Municipal Council in 1977, and then as a Deputy in 1981.

Named National Secretary of the Socialist Party, Delegate for External Relations and then Delegate for the Developing Countries, he participated in the creation of the Jean Jaurès Foundation, becoming its Secretary General in 1992.

He also served as a Member of the Economic and Social Council (1999-1994) and Regional Councillor of the Rhône-Alpes Region (1992 to 1999). Since 2003, he has chaired the National Council of the Socialist Party (reelected in 2004).

The initiator of the Plural Left, his list won three district in the 1995 municipal elections. Elected Mayor of the 9th district, he proved to be the ardent protagonist of a constructive opposition and joined the Executive of Greater Lyon, chaired by Raymond Barre.

Senator since 1999 (reelected in 2004), he was elected Mayor of Lyon in March 2001, then President of Greater Lyon. His vision for Lyon and its agglomeration combines a strong ambition for development and real attention to the residents’ living environment and quality of life.

Elected in October 2006 as President of the Association des Communautés Urbaines de France (association of urban communities of France), Gérard Collomb leads strong action in favour of ensuring a dynamic metropolis (obtaining 5 economic competitiveness hubs, including 3 with a global mission) and increasing Lyon’s power in the major international networks.

Elected Chairman of the Committee on Decentralized Cooperation of the global network United Cities and Local Government in June 2005, then as President of the World Digital Solidarity Agency in July 2005, he also chairs the Committee on European and International Affairs within the Association des Maires de Grandes Villes (the large city mayors’ association).

The Mayor of Lyon was also elected in November 2006 as President of Eurocities, a network federating Europe’s 130 biggest metropolises. Elected Mayor of Lyon in 2001, reelected as a Senator in 2004, he was reelected Mayor of Lyon on the 1st round of the March 2008 municipal elections and reelected President of Greater Lyon in April 2008.
